Adriana and Matěj Halouskovi are travel bloggers behind the successful blog Czech the World.

Matěj was born in Prague and has lived here his entire life and Adriana moved here more than 10 years ago.

We have traveled to more than 60 countries, but if we could tell you what place we know the most, it is our city

Looking for the best restaurants in Prague?

Prague’s food scene is much more interesting than many first-time visitors expect. You can still find traditional pubs serving goulash, schnitzel and perfectly poured Czech beer, but the city also has creative tasting menus, modern Czech bistros, excellent Vietnamese cuisine and some genuinely impressive fine-dining restaurants.

The difficult part is knowing which places are worth your limited time.

Restaurants around Prague’s main attractions range from excellent to extremely touristy. A beautiful location beside Old Town Square or Charles Bridge does not automatically mean that the restaurant is good—and a restaurant filled with Czech customers is not automatically hidden far outside the center.

We live in Prague and have grouped this listicle into six categories: typical Czech food in the centre, fine dining, budget restaurants, local pubs, tables with a view, and international kitchens.

Use it to choose a restaurant for every part of your trip: your first Czech meal, an affordable lunch, a romantic dinner, a special occasion or a break from traditional Central European food.

Join a guided Czech food and beer tasting tour if you would rather sample several kitchens in one evening than book one long dinner.

Best Restaurants in Prague Map

This map shows the 21 restaurants below, coloured by category: typical Czech food in the centre, fine dining, budget, local pubs, views and international kitchens.

Typical Czech in the centre (blue)

  • 420 Restaurant, Café Savoy and Kantýna.

Fine dining (red)

  • La Degustation, Field, Štangl, LEVITATE and Casa de Carli.

Budget, pubs, views and international

  • Teal: Eska, Lehká hlava and Naše maso.
  • Orange: Lokál, Výčep and U Kroka.
  • Green: Kuchyň, Mlýnec and Terasa U Zlaté studně.
  • Purple: Taro, Sansho, The Eatery and Alma.

Best restaurants with typical Czech food in the centre

If you want a proper Czech meal without leaving the historic centre, start here.

These restaurants serve guláš, svíčková, roasted meats and other familiar plates in Old Town, New Town and Malá Strana. You do not need a long tram ride for a good Czech dinner — you just need to skip the tourist menus on Old Town Square, with one important exception below.

If you want to know what to order once you sit down, keep our traditional Czech food guide open — svíčková, guláš and knedlíky make much more sense with a short explanation.

1. 420 Restaurant

Best restaurant directly on Old Town Square

Location: Old Town Square
Best for: Central sightseeing and modern Czech classics
Price level: $$$

Finding a genuinely good restaurant directly beside Prague’s most famous tourist attraction is not easy.

Restaurant 420 is one of the important exceptions.

The restaurant was created by Michelin-starred chef Radek Kašpárek and Marek Komínek. It serves modern versions of Czech and Central European dishes, with additional production taking place in its own bakery and butcher facilities.

The restaurant is included in the Michelin Guide’s Prague selection.

What we love

The location is extremely convenient for first-time visitors, but the restaurant does not rely solely on its address.

It is a strong choice when you want a polished Czech meal near the Astronomical Clock without entering an obvious tourist trap.

What to consider

You are still paying partly for one of the most expensive and famous locations in Prague.

Travelers prioritizing value over convenience should consider Výčep, Lokál or U Kroka instead.

Reserve 420 Restaurant before you walk onto Old Town Square — otherwise you will end up in a picture-menu trap next door.

2. Café Savoy

Best grand Prague café and restaurant

Location: Near Kampa and Újezd
Best for: Breakfast, brunch and elegant Czech café culture
Price level: $$–$$$

Café Savoy occupies a grand historic interior beneath an ornate neo-Renaissance ceiling.

It is busiest during breakfast and brunch, but it also works as a proper restaurant later in the day. The menu combines Czech and Central European café traditions, pastries and more substantial dishes.

Café Savoy is operated by Ambiente and describes itself as a busy café during the day and a quieter restaurant in the evening.

What we love

The interior makes an ordinary breakfast feel like part of the Prague sightseeing experience.

Its location is also convenient for Kampa Island, Petřín Hill, the National Theatre and Malá Strana.

What to consider

The café is extremely popular, particularly on weekend mornings. Arriving without a reservation may involve waiting.

It is more expensive than an ordinary local bakery or neighborhood café.

Local tip

Dinner is often calmer than breakfast and gives you more time to appreciate the interior.

Café Savoy is the grand breakfast. For more coffee shops, see our best cafés in Prague.

3. Kantýna

Best restaurant in Prague for meat lovers

Location: Politických vězňů Street, New Town
Best for: Steaks, Czech beef and an informal experience
Price level: $$–$$$

Kantýna combines a butcher shop, restaurant and informal dining hall inside a former bank building near Wenceslas Square.

Guests choose meat and dishes at different counters, receive them on a tray and find a place at one of the shared tables. The selection usually includes steaks, sausages, tartare, slow-cooked meat and changing daily dishes.

Kantýna is operated by Ambiente and presents itself as a restaurant run by butchers, with meat prepared and sold directly on site.

What we love

The format is unusual, informal and enjoyable, particularly for groups.

It is also an excellent alternative to a traditional steakhouse.

What to consider

Vegetarians will have very limited reasons to visit.

The ordering system can initially feel confusing, particularly during busy periods. Ask a member of staff to explain how it works.

Local tip

Do not order everything immediately. Start with a few smaller dishes, then return for more after you understand the portion sizes.

Best fine-dining restaurants

The current Michelin selection includes five one-star restaurants in Prague: La Degustation Bohême Bourgeoise, Field, Štangl, LEVITATE and Casa de Carli.

Book these for a special occasion, not for a quick dinner between sightseeing. Tasting-menu slots disappear first, especially on Friday and Saturday.

4. La Degustation Bohême Bourgeoise

Best overall fine-dining restaurant in Prague

Location: Haštalská Street, Old Town
Best for: Modern Czech cuisine, special occasions and food lovers
Price level: $$$$

La Degustation Bohême Bourgeoise is our top recommendation for travelers who want to experience Czech cuisine at its most refined.

Chef Oldřich Sahajdák and his team create a multi-course tasting menu based on Czech and Central European culinary traditions. Rather than simply making traditional dishes look more elegant, the restaurant explores older ingredients, techniques and flavors and rebuilds them into a modern dining experience.

The restaurant currently holds one Michelin star. It serves a tasting menu rather than a conventional à la carte selection, and ingredients change according to the season and availability from local farmers, foragers and producers.

The atmosphere is polished but not unnecessarily formal. The open kitchen also allows diners to watch the team preparing and finishing the courses.

What we love

This is one of the few restaurants where an international visitor can experience Czech culinary history without eating a heavy plate of meat, dumplings and sauce.

What to consider

Dinner is a significant financial and time commitment. Reserve several hours and do not plan another major evening activity immediately afterward.

The menu may also be less suitable for extremely selective eaters who prefer choosing each individual dish.

Our recommendation

Book the full experience when this is the gastronomic highlight of your trip. A wine or non-alcoholic pairing can add considerably to the final cost, but it also provides a more complete experience.

Reserve La Degustation several weeks ahead — tasting-menu slots disappear first, especially on Friday and Saturday.

5. Field

Best creative tasting menu in Prague

Location: Near the Convent of St. Agnes, Old Town
Best for: Contemporary fine dining and visually creative dishes
Price level: $$$$

Field is another of Prague’s established Michelin-starred restaurants.

The restaurant is led by chef Radek Kašpárek and presents seasonal ingredients in imaginative, highly detailed tasting menus. The interior is minimalist and restrained, allowing the food to become the main focus.

Field has retained a Michelin star in the current Czech selection. The restaurant offers different menu formats at lunch and dinner, although the exact number of courses and dishes changes. The restaurant also states that it is not suitable for children under six.

La Degustation or Field?

Choose La Degustation when you want a stronger connection to Czech culinary history.

Choose Field when you prefer modern international fine dining, artistic presentation and a more experimental feeling.

Both restaurants are excellent, but they offer noticeably different experiences.

What we love

The shorter lunch menu can be an approachable way to experience a Michelin-starred Prague restaurant without committing to the longest dinner menu.

What to consider

Field is not designed as a casual family restaurant. The presentation and pace are best suited to diners who enjoy tasting menus and slower, experience-focused meals.

Check Field’s current tasting menu and reserve in advance — this is not a walk-in restaurant.

6. Štangl

Best modern Czech tasting menu

Location: Karlín
Best for: Seasonal Czech ingredients and contemporary gastronomy
Price level: $$$$

Štangl occupies the upper floor above Eska in Karlín and received its first Michelin star in the 2025 Czechia selection.

The restaurant’s tasting menus are based on fundamental local ingredients, fermentation and seasonality. The open interior keeps the kitchen visible, creating a less traditional and more immediate fine-dining experience.

Current menus are structured around several courses, with each course focusing on an important local ingredient. Štangl has also received a Michelin Green Star for its approach to sustainability.

What we love

Štangl feels distinctly modern without losing its connection to Czech agriculture and culinary traditions.

The Karlín location also makes it easy to combine dinner with drinks in one of Prague’s most interesting modern neighborhoods.

What to consider

The restaurant is outside the historic center, although it is easily reached by metro or tram.

The menu is tasting-menu focused, so it is not the right choice when everyone in your group wants to order freely.

Local tip

Arrive earlier and walk through Karlín or stop for coffee and pastries downstairs at Eska.

Reserve Štangl before you go to Karlín — the dining room is small and the tasting menu is the whole point.

Štangl, Karlín

7. LEVITATE

Best Asian-inspired fine dining

Location: Vinohrady
Best for: Adventurous diners and chef’s-table experiences
Price level: $$$$

LEVITATE combines Scandinavian ideas with Asian ingredients, flavors and presentation.

The restaurant moved to Vinohradská Street and currently holds one Michelin star. Its concept is based on a carefully staged sensory experience rather than a conventional dinner with starters and main courses.

This is the most internationally influenced of Prague’s Michelin-starred restaurants.

What we love

LEVITATE provides something completely different from the Czech-focused menus at La Degustation and Štangl.

It is particularly suitable for visitors who have already experienced traditional Czech food and want a more surprising dinner.

What to consider

This is a highly curated experience. Travelers who prefer uncomplicated flavors, familiar dishes or a quick meal should choose another restaurant.

Dietary restrictions should always be discussed before booking a tasting menu.

Check LEVITATE availability early if you want a counter seat; those go first.

LEVITATE, Vinohrady

8. Casa de Carli

Best Italian restaurant in Prague

Location: Vězeňská Street, Old Town
Best for: Modern Italian cuisine and romantic dinners
Price level: $$$

Casa de Carli is a small family-run Italian restaurant led by chef Matteo De Carli.

The cuisine is inspired by different Italian regions and focuses on fresh, seasonal ingredients. The food is rooted in Italian tradition but presented with modern precision.

Casa de Carli received its first Michelin star in the 2025 Czechia guide, joining Prague’s established fine-dining restaurants. It is currently open on weekdays and closed on Saturdays and Sundays, so plan carefully.

What we love

The restaurant feels personal and intimate rather than like a large luxury hotel dining room.

It is also a good fine-dining option for travelers who do not necessarily want another Czech tasting menu.

What to consider

Weekend visitors may not be able to eat here because the restaurant’s regular schedule currently focuses on weekdays.

Reservations are essential because the dining room is relatively small.

Reserve Casa de Carli for a weekday lunch or dinner — weekday lunch is the quieter, better-value visit.

Casa de Carli, Prague

Best budget restaurants

Prague is no longer as cheap as it once was, particularly inside Old Town. You can still eat well without choosing fast food.

Eska, Lehká hlava and Naše maso are our everyday value restaurants. Lokál and U Kroka in the local-pubs section below are similarly fair-priced if you want a Czech plate and a beer. Sansho is also worth considering at lunchtime.

Look for a polední menu

Many Prague restaurants offer a weekday lunch menu called a polední menu or denní nabídka.

These menus are aimed primarily at local workers and usually contain a soup and several main-course choices at considerably lower prices than the evening menu.

They are commonly available from approximately 11:00 until 14:00 or until individual dishes sell out.

Local tip

The best-value lunch dishes are often written only on a board or a separate Czech menu. Ask whether an English version is available.

9. Eska

Best restaurant and bakery in Karlín

Location: Karlín
Best for: Breakfast, sourdough bread and modern Czech food
Price level: $$

Eska is part bakery, part restaurant and part food laboratory.

It combines older food-preservation techniques, open-fire cooking and fermentation with contemporary Czech ingredients. The bakery produces sourdough bread, pastries and other items throughout the day.

Eska opened in 2015 and helped establish Karlín as one of Prague’s main food neighborhoods. Its restaurant and bakery operate below the Michelin-starred Štangl.

What we love

Eska works almost any time of day.

Come for breakfast and coffee, buy bread to take away or stay for a more substantial lunch.

What to consider

The industrial interior can be busy and noisy. It is more suited to a casual meal than a romantic evening.

Some dishes use fermentation and strong flavors that may not appeal to everyone.

Local tip

Karlín is easily reached from the center by metro line B. Combine Eska with a walk around Karlín Square, Invalidovna or the Vítkov pedestrian tunnel.

10. Lehká hlava

Best vegetarian restaurant in Prague Old Town

Location: Near Bethlehem Square, Old Town
Best for: Vegetarians, vegans and mixed groups
Price level: $$

Lehká hlava, meaning “Clear Head,” is one of Prague’s best-known vegetarian restaurants.

It occupies a historic Old Town house and has several playfully decorated rooms, including an interior with a starry ceiling. The menu is vegetarian, with a wide range of vegan options.

The restaurant is located only a short walk from Charles Bridge and identifies itself as a dedicated vegetarian and vegan restaurant.

What we love

Lehká hlava is convenient for sightseeing and works well for groups containing both vegetarians and meat eaters.

The unusual interior also makes it more memorable than a generic plant-based café.

What to consider

The restaurant is small and popular. Reservations are strongly recommended, particularly for dinner.

The menu combines several international influences rather than focusing purely on Czech food.

Local tip

Ask about any current vegetarian version of a Czech classic. Seasonal offerings may change throughout the year.

Lehká hlava

11. Naše maso

Best butcher-shop lunch in central Prague

Location: Dlážděná Street, New Town
Best for: A fast, excellent meat lunch among locals
Price level: $–$$

Naše maso is a butcher shop with a few standing tables, not a conventional restaurant.

It sits a few steps from Kantýna and belongs to the same Ambiente group. Kantýna is the sit-down steakhouse in a former bank hall. Naše maso is where you stand at the marble counter, order a sausage or a plate of roasted meat, and eat it with bread and pickles in twenty minutes.

The meat is the point. Staff will typically recommend whatever was butchered that morning. You pay at the counter and leave before a tourist lunch would even receive a menu.

What we love

This is one of the most local lunches you can have within walking distance of the main train station and the Powder Tower. The quality is far higher than the price suggests.

What to consider

There is no table service and little English-language ceremony. It is not a place for a long dinner, a large group that wants to sit down, or anyone who does not eat meat.

It also gets busy at lunch. If the small room is full, take a sausage to go or walk next door to Kantýna.

Local tip

Go early on a weekday. The best cuts sell out, and the room is more comfortable before the office lunch rush.

Best local pubs

A Prague pub meal is still one of the best ways to eat like a local: tank beer, schnitzel, guláš and a room that fills up after work.

Lokál is the classic centre pub. Výčep is the modern neighbourhood taproom. U Kroka is the traditional hospoda below Vyšehrad.

12. Lokál Dlouhááá

Best traditional Czech pub experience – Our favourite 🙂

Location: Dlouhá Street, Old Town
Best for: Czech classics and tank beer
Price level: $$

Lokál Dlouhááá is one of the easiest places for first-time visitors to experience a modern version of a traditional Czech pub.

The long dining room combines simple retro design, communal energy and freshly poured Pilsner Urquell. The kitchen focuses on straightforward Czech dishes prepared from locally sourced ingredients.

The original Lokál Dlouhááá opened in 2009 and was followed by several other Lokál pubs across Prague and the Czech Republic.

Look for dishes such as:

  • schnitzel,
  • svíčková,
  • beef goulash,
  • fried cheese,
  • sausages,
  • seasonal daily specials.

What we love

Lokál is tourist-friendly without feeling like a restaurant designed only for tourists.

It is lively, affordable compared with fine dining and very conveniently located.

What to consider

The dining room can be loud and busy. This is a Czech pub, not a romantic candlelit restaurant.

The evening menu may also differ from the more varied weekday lunch specials.

Local tip

Several Lokál branches operate across Prague. Lokál Dlouhááá is convenient for Old Town, while Lokál U Bílé kuželky is useful when sightseeing in Malá Strana.

Lokál is the easy traditional choice. For a shorter list of classic Czech kitchens, start with Lokál, Kuchyň, Výčep and U Kroka and skip anything with a picture menu on Old Town Square.

Lokál Dlouhááá

13. Výčep

Best modern Czech restaurant for value

Location: Vinohrady
Best for: Modern Czech food without fine-dining formality
Price level: $$–$$$

Výčep is one of our strongest recommendations for travelers who want to see what modern Czech cooking looks like outside a tasting-menu restaurant.

The menu takes familiar pub ingredients and Czech comfort food and treats them with much greater care and creativity. The restaurant remains relaxed and approachable rather than feeling formal.

Výčep received a Michelin Bib Gourmand in the current Czech guide, recognizing its combination of quality and value.

What we love

This is a place where both adventurous food lovers and travelers simply looking for an excellent meal can be happy.

The restaurant also takes you into residential Vinohrady, away from the busiest tourist streets.

What to consider

The menu is seasonal, and individual dishes may be unfamiliar to foreign visitors. Ask the staff for explanations and recommendations rather than automatically choosing the most recognizable option.

Local tip

Combine dinner with a walk through Vinohrady, Jiřího z Poděbrad Square or nearby Riegrovy Sady.

Reserve Výčep for dinner and weekends. Walk-ins sometimes work at lunch, rarely on Friday night.

Výčep, Vinohrady

14. U Kroka

Best traditional restaurant near Vyšehrad

Location: Vratislavova Street, below Vyšehrad
Best for: Traditional food, reasonable prices and relaxed dinners
Price level: $$

U Kroka is a small family restaurant close to Vyšehrad.

Its history follows the tradition of a Prague inn that first opened in the area in 1895. Today, the restaurant serves a mixture of Czech classics and modern dishes in a comfortable neighborhood setting.

What we love

U Kroka provides a more relaxed and local-feeling alternative to eating in the Old Town.

It is also perfectly positioned for lunch or dinner after exploring Vyšehrad.

What to consider

The restaurant’s popularity with international visitors means it is no longer an undiscovered secret.

Reserve ahead rather than assuming its location outside Old Town guarantees an empty table.

Local tip

Visit Vyšehrad in the late afternoon, enjoy the river views and then walk downhill to U Kroka for dinner.

U Kroka sits naturally at the end of a Vyšehrad walk. We built that into our 3-day Prague itinerary if you want the rest of the day planned too.

U Kroka, Vyšehrad

Best restaurants with a view

A view does not make the food good — but these three restaurants combine a serious kitchen with a table you will remember.

Kuchyň sits on Hradčany Square above Malá Strana. Mlýnec looks onto Charles Bridge. Terasa U Zlaté studně is the special-occasion terrace below Prague Castle.

15. Kuchyň

Best restaurant near Prague Castle

Location: Hradčany Square
Best for: Czech food, beer and panoramic views
Price level: $$–$$$

Kuchyň is located inside Salm Palace, directly beside Prague Castle.

The restaurant serves Czech dishes inspired by historical palace cookbooks. Guests can look into the cooking pots and choose according to what is currently being prepared rather than relying only on written menu descriptions.

Its terrace provides an impressive view over Malá Strana and the city. The restaurant is part of the National Gallery Prague complex on Hradčany Square.

What we love

Few Prague restaurants combine genuinely good Czech food with such a convenient sightseeing location and memorable view.

Kuchyň is an ideal lunch stop after visiting Prague Castle.

What to consider

The terrace is particularly desirable during warm weather and fills quickly.

The restaurant is also not inexpensive by ordinary Czech pub standards, although the location helps justify the difference.

Local tip

Take a tram uphill, visit Prague Castle in the morning and eat at Kuchyň before walking downhill through Hradčany and Malá Strana.

If you are heading up to the castle first, read our Prague Castle tickets and visitor guide — then eat at Kuchyň before walking downhill.

Kuchyň terrace overlooking Malá Strana and St. Nicholas Church

16. Mlýnec

Best restaurant beside Charles Bridge

Location: Novotného lávka, Old Town
Best for: Charles Bridge views and special dinners
Price level: $$$

Mlýnec occupies a riverside position directly beside Charles Bridge.

The restaurant serves modern Czech and international cuisine in a contemporary dining room with large windows. Its terrace sits almost beneath the bridge, providing one of Prague’s most distinctive restaurant locations.

What we love

Mlýnec offers the rare combination of a world-famous location and a restaurant worth visiting for the food.

It is particularly attractive after an evening walk through Old Town or across Charles Bridge.

What to consider

Not every table has the same view. Requesting a window or terrace table does not always guarantee one, so confirm the seating arrangement when reserving.

Prices reflect the location and style of the restaurant.

Local tip

A later dinner can be more atmospheric once much of the daytime crowd around Charles Bridge has disappeared.

Reserve Mlýnec and ask for a Charles Bridge view — the terrace tables are the whole reason to come.

17. Terasa U Zlaté studně

Best romantic restaurant with a view

Location: Below Prague Castle, Malá Strana
Best for: Anniversaries, proposals and sunset dinners
Price level: $$$$

Terasa U Zlaté studně occupies the upper floors of the Golden Well Hotel directly beneath Prague Castle.

Its terraces overlook the rooftops of Malá Strana, Old Town and the Vltava River. The restaurant offers seasonal tasting menus and refined European cuisine under executive chef Lukáš Hlaváček.

The restaurant received three toques from Gault & Millau Czechia for 2026. Its main attraction remains the panoramic terrace, particularly during warmer months.

What we love

This is one of Prague’s strongest special-occasion settings.

The combination of quiet Malá Strana streets, Prague Castle and the rooftop view feels genuinely memorable.

What to consider

The experience is expensive, and the most desirable terrace seating is seasonal.

During poor weather, you may dine indoors, where the view remains attractive but the experience is different.

Local tip

Book around sunset, but confirm the exact sunset time for your travel date. In summer, sunset can be much later than ordinary dinner hours.

Staying nearby makes a sunset dinner much easier — start with where to stay in Prague, then browse our favourite luxury hotels if the evening should feel special.

Terasa U Zlaté studně

Best international restaurants

Prague is not only dumplings. When you want a break from Central European food, these kitchens are the ones we send visitors to.

Taro and Sansho cover Vietnamese and broader Asian cooking. The Eatery is the neighbourhood table in Holešovice. Alma is the stylish all-rounder near Národní, with live-fire cooking and international influences.

For Italian at Michelin level, see Casa de Carli in the fine-dining section above.

18. Taro

Best Vietnamese tasting menu in Prague

Location: Dunaj Palace, New Town
Best for: Vietnamese-Czech flavors and counter dining
Price level: $$$

Taro takes inspiration from Vietnamese cuisine and combines it with ingredients from Czech farms.

Guests sit around an open kitchen and watch the chefs prepare a structured tasting menu. The approach is modern and precise but remains connected to the Vietnamese roots of the team.

Taro is now located in the renovated Dunaj Palace. Its concept is led by chef Khanh Ta and centers on Vietnamese flavors interpreted through a fine-dining tasting format.

What we love

Prague has a large and important Vietnamese community, and Taro presents this connection in a form visitors may not encounter elsewhere in Europe.

The counter seating also makes the meal feel interactive.

What to consider

The tasting-menu format gives guests less control than an à la carte restaurant.

Discuss allergies and dietary restrictions before booking.

Reserve Taro well in advance for dinner. Counter seats are limited and the kitchen does not rush.

Taro, Prague

19. Sansho

Best Asian sharing menu

Location: Petrská Quarter, New Town
Best for: Casual tasting menus and groups
Price level: $$–$$$

Sansho was one of the restaurants that helped transform Prague’s modern dining scene.

Its menu combines Asian techniques and flavors with seasonal local ingredients. Dinner is often served as a sharing or tasting-style experience, while lunch can be more flexible and affordable.

Sansho currently offers both lunch options and a multi-course evening menu. Its tasting experience combines several smaller courses with a larger main course and side dishes.

What we love

Sansho feels relaxed and generous rather than ceremonial.

It is an excellent choice for travelers who want creative food without the price or atmosphere of a Michelin-starred dining room.

What to consider

The evening experience works best when the entire table is comfortable sharing food.

Very conservative eaters may find some flavor combinations unfamiliar.

Local tip

Lunch is a good way to experience Sansho at a lower price and with less commitment than the full evening menu.

Sansho, Prague

20. The Eatery

Best neighborhood restaurant in Holešovice

Location: Holešovice
Best for: Open-kitchen dining and exploring beyond the center
Price level: $$–$$$

The Eatery is a modern neighborhood restaurant in Prague 7, well outside the most tourist-heavy part of the city.

The open kitchen forms the center of the restaurant, with guests able to watch the chefs working. The menu changes according to the season and combines Czech ingredients with modern European cooking.

The Eatery currently holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for quality cooking at a good-value price level.

What we love

The restaurant gives visitors a reason to explore Holešovice, one of Prague’s most interesting modern districts.

It is refined enough for a special evening but remains more relaxed than a traditional fine-dining restaurant.

What to consider

The location is not convenient for a visitor who has only a few hours in the historic center.

Plan the restaurant as part of an afternoon or evening in Holešovice rather than traveling there only for a rushed meal.

What to see nearby

Combine The Eatery with:

  • DOX Centre for Contemporary Art,
  • Prague Market,
  • Vnitroblock,
  • National Gallery’s Trade Fair Palace,
  • Stromovka Park.
The Eatery, Holešovice

21. Alma

Best all-round modern Prague restaurant

Location: Near Národní Street, New Town
Best for: Sharing plates, cocktails and a stylish dinner
Price level: $$–$$$

Alma is a restaurant, café and bar inside a historic building close to the center of Prague.

Its food combines seasonal ingredients, live-fire cooking and international influences. Guests can choose from an à la carte menu or a tasting-style experience, depending on the current offering.

Alma received a Michelin Bib Gourmand in the 2025 Czechia selection and has quickly become one of the most prominent modern restaurants in central Prague.

What we love

Alma works for many different occasions.

You can come for a full dinner, meet someone for a drink, share several dishes or spend a relaxed evening without the rigid structure of fine dining.

What to consider

The atmosphere is lively, so it may not be the best restaurant for someone seeking a silent, traditional or highly romantic dining room.

Local tip

Alma is well located for an evening after visiting the National Theatre, Dancing House or the riverbank.

Book Alma if you want a neighbourhood table without a tasting-menu commitment.

Alma, Prague

Restaurants to avoid in Prague

We cannot say that every restaurant in a particular street is bad. Excellent restaurants can be found even beside Prague’s most famous attractions.

However, be cautious when a restaurant has several of these warning signs:

  • staff aggressively inviting people inside,
  • a menu containing dozens of unrelated international dishes,
  • no prices visible outside,
  • pictures of every meal,
  • “traditional Czech” dishes that are not genuinely Czech,
  • additional charges that are not explained clearly,
  • reviews repeatedly mentioning incorrect bills,
  • an almost empty dining room while every neighboring restaurant is busy.
Restaurants to avoid in Prague

Be careful with restaurants on Old Town Square

Eating on Old Town Square is not automatically a mistake.

Restaurant 420 is a good example of a restaurant worth visiting in an extremely touristy location. However, many other restaurants charge high prices primarily for their terraces and view.

Check the full menu before sitting down.

Trdelník is not a traditional Prague meal

Trdelník is now closely associated with Prague tourism, but it is not an essential historic Czech food.

Enjoy one when it looks appealing, but do not treat it as the most authentic dessert in the city.

For a more Czech experience, look for:

  • větrník,
  • kremrole,
  • buchty,
  • koláče,
  • fruit dumplings,
  • traditional Czech cakes.

Do you need restaurant reservations in Prague?

For popular restaurants, yes.

Reserve well ahead for:

  • La Degustation,
  • Field,
  • Štangl,
  • LEVITATE,
  • Casa de Carli,
  • Terasa U Zlaté studně,
  • Taro.

We also recommend reservations for:

  • Výčep,
  • Alma,
  • 420 Restaurant,
  • Kuchyň,
  • Café Savoy,
  • Mlýnec,
  • Lehká hlava,
  • U Kroka.

Lokál and Kantýna sometimes accommodate walk-ins, but both can become extremely busy.

How far ahead should you reserve?

For Michelin-starred restaurants and special occasions, reserve several weeks ahead.

For popular casual restaurants, a few days may be sufficient outside the busiest travel periods.

Book earlier when visiting during:

  • Easter,
  • May and June,
  • September,
  • December,
  • public holidays,
  • Friday and Saturday evenings.

Tipping in Prague restaurants

Service is not automatically included in every Prague restaurant bill.

For good table service, a tip of approximately 5–10% is common. Higher tips are optional and should reflect the quality of the experience.

Tell the server the total amount you want to pay before they process your card.

For example, when the bill is 920 CZK and you want to pay 1,000 CZK, say:

“One thousand, please.”

Do not assume that leaving cash on the table is the only tipping method. Many restaurants allow the tip to be added to a card payment, although practices vary.

Check the bill

Restaurants should show prices clearly, but always check:

  • whether bread or snacks were charged,
  • the number of drinks,
  • the selected tip,

Intentional overcharging is not normal in reputable Prague restaurants, but mistakes can happen anywhere.

What time do people eat dinner in Prague?

Czech residents often eat dinner earlier than visitors from Southern Europe.

A typical restaurant dinner may begin between 18:00 and 20:00. Popular restaurants remain busy later, especially on Fridays and Saturdays.

Fine-dining tasting menus may limit their latest possible reservation time because the experience takes several hours.

For a quieter meal, reserve around 17:30 or 18:00. For a livelier atmosphere, choose approximately 19:30 or 20:00.

Prague food tours

A guided food tour is useful when you have limited time and want to try several Czech dishes without ordering multiple full meals.

A good Prague food tour may include:

  • traditional Czech dishes,
  • local beer,
  • Czech wine,
  • pastries and desserts,
  • open-faced sandwiches,
  • information about Czech food culture,
  • visits to neighborhoods outside the busiest tourist streets.

Food tours vary considerably. Check whether the price includes all food and drinks and how many people are allowed in the group.

Frequently asked questions about Prague restaurants

What is the best restaurant in Prague?

For fine dining, our best overall choice is La Degustation Bohême Bourgeoise.

For a less expensive modern Czech meal, choose Výčep. For traditional Czech pub food and beer, choose Lokál Dlouhááá.

Where should I eat traditional Czech food in Prague?

Lokál, Kuchyň, U Kroka and Výčep are all excellent choices. Kantýna is particularly good for meat, while 420 Restaurant provides a more polished option directly on Old Town Square.

What is the best Michelin-starred restaurant in Prague?

La Degustation is our first choice for a visitor who wants to experience modern Czech cuisine. Field is ideal for more creative contemporary dining, while Štangl focuses strongly on local and seasonal ingredients.

What is the best restaurant near Old Town Square?

Restaurant 420 is directly on Old Town Square and is our top choice in the immediate area.

La Degustation, Field, Casa de Carli, Lokál Dlouhááá and Alma are also within reasonable walking distance.

What is the best restaurant near Charles Bridge?

Mlýnec has an exceptional riverside location directly beside Charles Bridge.

Hotel Pod Věží’s restaurant and several Malá Strana establishments are also close, but always check reviews carefully in this heavily visited area.

What is the best restaurant near Prague Castle?

Kuchyň is our favorite convenient option because it is located directly on Hradčany Square and has a terrace overlooking Prague.

Terasa U Zlaté studně is a more expensive and romantic alternative below the castle.

What is the best romantic restaurant in Prague?

Terasa U Zlaté studně is our top choice for views and special occasions.

Mlýnec is excellent for a Charles Bridge view, while Casa de Carli provides a smaller and more intimate dining room.

What is the best vegetarian restaurant in Prague?

Lehká hlava is our top central choice for a fully vegetarian restaurant. Many modern Prague restaurants also provide vegetarian options, but tasting-menu restaurants should be contacted in advance.

Is it expensive to eat in Prague?

Restaurants in Prague remain relatively good value compared with cities such as London, Paris or Copenhagen, but the historic center and Prague’s best fine-dining restaurants can be expensive.

Eating weekday lunch menus outside the busiest tourist streets can reduce your food budget significantly.

Should I eat on Old Town Square?

You can, but choose carefully.

Restaurant 420 is a good option. Many other restaurants primarily charge for the location, so check the menu, prices and recent reviews before sitting down.

Is tap water free in Prague restaurants?

Do not automatically assume that tap water will be provided free of charge. Restaurant policies vary, and some businesses charge for filtered water or offer only bottled water.

Ask before ordering when this matters to you.

Final thoughts on the best restaurants in Prague

Prague is no longer a city where visitors have to choose between heavy pub food and overpriced tourist restaurants.

Traditional Czech cuisine remains an important part of the experience, but you can now explore it in many different forms.

Lokál serves familiar classics in a lively pub. Výčep gives traditional ingredients a modern treatment. Kuchyň connects Czech food with one of Prague’s best views, while La Degustation and Štangl transform local culinary history into complete tasting-menu experiences.

The city’s Vietnamese restaurants, modern bakeries and neighborhood bistros also reflect the Prague that locals experience today.

Our advice is to mix different styles during your visit.

Have one traditional Czech pub meal, try one modern restaurant, enjoy breakfast at a bakery or historic café and reserve a special dinner when your budget allows.

Most importantly, do not choose every restaurant only because it is beside the next attraction on your itinerary. Some of Prague’s best meals require a short tram or metro ride beyond the Old Town—and the surrounding neighborhoods are usually worth exploring too.
